What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured digital record that contains verified information about a product's origin, materials, sustainability credentials, and end-of-life handling. Under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781), manufacturers must attach a DPP — accessible via QR code — before placing affected products on the EU market.

Why is the EU introducing DPPs?

  • Advance EU Green Deal circular economy goals
  • Give consumers the right to know what products are made of
  • Enable recyclers and regulators to access verified sustainability data
  • Reduce greenwashing by mandating independently verified data
  • Support the EU Single Market with harmonised product information

What data goes in a DPP?

  • Product identity (name, GTIN/EAN, batch, manufacturer details)
  • Carbon footprint (production, transport, use phase, end-of-life)
  • Material composition (recycled content %, hazardous substances, SCIP)
  • Repairability score and spare parts availability
  • Recycling and end-of-life instructions
  • Certificates and regulatory markings (CE, REACH, RoHS)
  • Supply chain and origin of goods information

The QR Code Data Carrier

Each DPP must have a physical data carrier — typically a QR code printed on the product label or packaging. The QR code links to a publicly accessible viewer where consumers, recyclers, and regulators can see all public-tier DPP information without needing an account.

Tiered Access

DPPs support different access tiers to protect commercially sensitive data:

Public

Accessible to anyone via QR code. Basic sustainability data.

Authorised

Wholesalers, repair centres, professional recyclers.

Regulatory

Customs authorities, market surveillance bodies.
